Oh?
Well, that was true on Aug 12, '06 4:26 AM, but now...

We'll be announcing this more widely soon, but in the meantime we'd like to give the MUDS group a super-exclusive sneak preview of a little feature we'll be calling...

You'll notice that this feature is so incredibly new that the FAQ isn't even up yet. When it is, it'll probably look a little something like this:

Can I post on my Multiply site via e-mail?

Yes, and it's very easy to do! Just go to the Post Via E-mail setup page and create a PIN (Personal Identification Number), which can be from 3-20 characters long and contain letters or numbers. Then you'll be able to post to your Multiply site by sending e-mails to: PIN@username.multiply.com. Make sure to keep your PIN secret so nobody else can use it to post on your site.

The text you enter in the subject of your e-mail will become the title of your post and the body of your e-mail will become the description of your post. By default we'll post your e-mails as blog entries. However, if you attach two or more photos to the e-mail, we'll post it as a photo album. If you attach a video, we'll post it on your videos page. If you attach a song, we'll post it as a playlist. If you don't want your e-mail post to be shared on the Explore page right away, you can include the word "DRAFT" (all CAPS) anywhere in the subject and we'll save it as a draft for you.

Note that posts via e-mail (except for drafts) will be posted for "Everyone," and will not be shared with the people on your invite list.

We're still in the process of testing it out. So give it a try, enjoy it, and be sure to let us know what you think of it! Feedback is, as always, completely welcome.

i'm impressed.

this isn't something i'd ever use, myself. but it sure sounds pretty sophisticated (to me at least) to be able to sort where the post should go. :-)
rogeriototh wrote on Aug 15, '06, edited on Aug 15, '06
Well, looks to be working!
Is it possible to revoke this setting? or change the PIN?
pez wrote on Aug 15, '06
You can change your pin by clicking that "Post via e-mail" link again. If you set it to nothing, the feature is disabled.
arisbe wrote on Aug 15, '06
Nice. Thanks.

The FAQs should also say that email posts don't crosspost to your other blogs either. Unless you want to enable that.
vanillasecrets wrote on Aug 15, '06
Yay!! This makes running around the neighborhood easier. Thank youuuuuuuuuuuu.

I don't really see myself using this feature either. At least not much since I really don't have too much to blog about and any pics I wanted to upload I'd just upload the usual way. It DOES sound like it may be useful to some folks though.

Thank you !!

I have tried this feature and post a test blog here.

I use my nokia N72 to take my self using timer, send it via gprs connection, using my yahoo smtp account.

I can post anything.. anywhere.. just using me and my mobile phone!!!!
Awesome!!!

I Love You, Multiply

Ok, there IS a use for it that I hadn't thought of. LOL probably because I DON'T have a camera cell phone.
wishknew wrote on Aug 15, '06
James, this feature is useful for those who cannot access website using their browsers, but still can access their email. :)

Thankyou
james1960 wrote on Aug 15, '06
Got that much. Just for ME I couldn't see much use on a regular basis at least.

A question ... anything posted via email will automatically go to the blog section, right? So if I wanted to post on the review section or calendar, etc. I still have to go online and do that on the site, am I correct?

Emailing multiple photos will create an Album. Emailing a video will create a movie. Emailing audio files will create a playlist. Emailing text or text and one picture will create a blog entry. There is currently no way to create a calendar entry nor review via email.

Photo, video, music ... I got that. I do know how to read and comprehended what was originally posted. My question was SPECIFICALLY THIS, if you will read back my post ... in the current incarnation of multiply, reviews and recipes are considered blog entries, but those of us who are oldies on multiply still have them if we used to use them. What I want to know is ... if i am posting a review, is there a tag on the subject I can include that will make multiply know that I want it to go to my reviews section? or the recipes section?

And how does this affect tag words, btw?

Sorry, there is currently no way to create a calendar entry nor review nor recipe via email. There is also currently no support for creating tags when posting via email. We'll definitely consider these features for a future release after gauging customer feedback.

Another question popped into mind. When we post via email, is the post automatically set to be viewed by everyone or just to contacts?
lfom wrote on Aug 16, '06
Note that posts via e-mail will be posted publicly (except for drafts), and will not be shared with the people on your invite list.

[stereotypical blonde cap on]
Aah ... so you are saying that publicly automatically means EVERYONE, while network and any other is automatically PRIVATE. Doesn't matter if NETWORK comprises of hundreds of people. It still makes it private.

I see. Silly me for seeking clarification on what was apparently so obvious.

Ah. Will clarify.

I just realised that this solves an issue I was having recently where I can't cut and paste something into my blog post. (Like say I wrote something in Word, and wanted to post it afterward.) I've found that there's no paste option when I write a blog in Multiply. But this way I can cut and paste it into my email and post it from there.
marc wrote on Aug 16, '06
You should be able to paste by using CTRL-V on your keyboard.
kamma wrote on Aug 16, '06
Didn't know that.
Thanks

Here is a question, could I post a zip file as a draft for example. Then transfer the zip to my photos / video / music section at a later date? Sorry if this has been asked and answered before, it didn't pop out at me with a quick scan through the thread.
lfom wrote on Aug 21, '06
Hmmm, I am not sure, but I guess the ZIP file will be treated as a Video post (the video section accepts any file format).
moharifwidarto wrote on Aug 21, '06
Hi, glad to hear that multipliers can post-by-email. I have requested that feature since Dec 9, 2005. Check this http://moharifwidarto.multiply.com/journal/item/52 . Though you take so long to provide that, I do appreciate and thank you.
james1960 wrote on Aug 21, '06
Well, I tried that and didn't see any zip files anywhere, in either my blog, videos, or photos. My concern is if I email post some, ermmm, adult material, and someone views it BEFORE I can get online to limit access I could get in trouble with admin. Been there, done that elsewhere, I don't want a repeat here.

Just make sure you add the word DRAFT to the email subject as explained here.
james1960 wrote on Aug 21, '06
Did that in BOTH the subject line and in the body with my test zip file. Oh, silly me, you meant if / when I want to limit access (at least temporarily) to pics or videos I may send. (sigh) Someone pass me the stupid hat please LOL.
isazaly wrote on Oct 1, '06, edited on Oct 1, '06
been waiting for this feature and i'm glad to stay! only wish that you can set it to "private mode" (via "SUBJECT" maybe?) just like you can set it to [draft] mode.

just my 2 cents. keep it up multiply..
glazarides wrote on Oct 20, '06
I would like to add my support to a few of the replies above on the subject of being able to make the email post 'everyone', 'network', 'contacts', or 'private' by some kind of Subject line code, and also be able to set a default for when you don't specify the privacy setting.

Otherwise... GREAT JOB!

Tried it and the post was set up as a "link" but I wanted it to show as a "blog" entry. There were pics associated with it, but when I click on the link, only the text shows up. I really, really want the pics there as they 'tell the story" better than the text. Why aren't they showing up?

So this worked differently for you than described in the FAQ? If so, please let customer service know about the issue.
