Blog EntryMUDS First Look: The Multiply ToolbarOct 19, '07 5:07 PM
by Everett for everyone
You may remember having seen our semi-recent staff blog announcement regarding the upcoming Multiply Toolbar.

"Upcoming" may be too strong a word, as it's available now, for Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers!

While it already works (and is awesome, to boot), we're not quite ready to roll it out to everyone on Multiply, so MUDS users -- feel special... for the time being. It's all yours until sometime early next week.

But, of course, there's some work involved. We'd like to you do a little more than simply use the toolbar... please use it and let us know what you think!

We not only appreciate your feedback, but know that it helps make Multiply better. So please, help us out. :)

This looks awesome. I've installed it on Firefox with no issues. I like the functionality and the settings. Easy to use and about what I would have wanted. Good config settings and I'm glad you let me set the refresh rate.

I might have suggested that you move the Search button to the left of the search field as to me that would be more intuitive, but after looking at the Google toolbar and Firefox Googlebar that I also have, I see they have the Search button on the right as you do. Might as well be consistent with them.

Great work. Thanks very much for your efforts, as always.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Cheers, Andy.

Which browser are you using? Are you saying that after you selected photos and submitted, it just hung and never redirected? How many photos did you try to add?

Same here, Using firefox 2.0.0.8 Uploaded two pictures a& a bit of dialog and the browser froze on "saving album as a draft". Restarted and it was actually saved in my photos as draft. Maybe just a fluke, will try do over.

saved in my photos as draft.
saved the photos, but not the text (title, description). Uploaded the second few pictures fine though.
tejasmidget wrote on Oct 19, '07
Well, maybe a minor glitch. Added a couple more to the existing album and I presently have 3 tabs open, with the first stuck on "saving album" and not redirecting, the second on the album that has the pictures already, but not the new text, and the third tab here.
I like the ease & speed of the drag & drop uploader, it defaults to full resolution?

i was thinking if it would be better if there is an OPTION to open the toolbarlink in another tab or window..

like if i wanted to post something, i can do that by clicking the "post" in the toolbar and opens up on another tab..

another thing, it's good as it is, but i think it can consider a link to the "NETWORKS".
as we can all see, it has a link on our updates, contact posts, group posts, my site and posting new content, an addition of the link to our contacts/network might also be considered, but if not, it's as good as it is..

anyway, these are just on my point of view.. =D

If you are using Firefox, click on the toolbar Options button and select Toolbar Settings. Set the checkbox Open Pages in New Tab. After this, clicking on any toolbar button will open the page in a new tab.

Another alternative is to press the Control key when you click on a toolbar button or menu item. This will open the page in a new tab, irrespective of the setting above.

Browser is no longer hanging, the upload page doesn't quite finish updating so it appears stopped for a bit but it does complete upload & redirect.
At least with this many hi-res photos.
redirecting <<18 of 24 photo(s) uploaded

There is a thin dragbar next to the toolbar Search Button. Click on it and drag to resize the searchbox.

I think he means that if you change the search options on the Multiply toolbar via the down arrow menu button next to the search function it will search the web via yahoo search

I Clicked the option to open in new tabs in the toolbar settings to solve this Jnamakulit.
SHAME It can not be moved from one location to another.. AS I,de like to drag in up from where it is on the top..... I Have tryed ... no luck as yet.. but i presume that is a browser issue & not to do with the toolbar -- But the toolbar could be set to no be draggable.. -- Tested this ages ago in TS Toolbar maker.

Could be like:-

Blocked User's

Network User List
Network Group's List

Ect ect. -- all on one single button to be added next to the My Site button on the toolbar
which could contain those items i,ve mentioned cause in the end they,ll be addon's we shall need more than most.

Like having the search box on the far left? Or being able to add buttons? (yeah yeah... I got spoiled with the yahoo toolbar.. just hated their search engine.

Can you be more specific about what doesn't work? The permanent way (based on the toolbar setting "Open Pages in New Tab"), or the temporary way (control+click on the toolbar button/menu item)? Or, both are not working?

Please try again and if it still doesn't work, please post your Firefox version and Operating System info. Also post the toolbar version number (found by clicking Toolbar "Options" menu and selecting "About Multiply Toolbar").

Thanks.

Ok, here's what's happening. I have already chosen "Open Pages n New Tab" in the "Toolbar Settings", so basically speaking, (correct me if I'm wrong) when I click a link on the toolbar, it should open on another tab right? It doesn't work on my pc. What happens instead, is that the link loads on the current tab. Did I do something wrong?

i'd like something similar, only it would be for groups -- instead of having all group posts globbed together under one total number, there's a few groups i'd like separate stats for.

i've found that i never click on the group posts icon because i know i'll likely just see a bunch of customized themes posts which i'm not interested in. but if there was a new post on muds, i'd clickit.

Is the Autoupdate working? I checked mine and put it in 5 minutes but it doesn't seem to update?
barefootmeg wrote on Oct 21, '07
i've had the auto-update get caught before. i had to restart my browser to knock it upside the head and get it working again. but that's only happened to me once. (and i'm a tab-queen so i rather abuse my browsers.)
jnamakulit wrote on Oct 21, '07

as i,ve noticed a cookie in or trys to load while a user is on the login screen
Named --- something like --> crdcntl <----- or simler ( crowd control )
jnamakulit wrote on Oct 21, '07
Ok, now I get it. The "AUTOUPDATE" on the message summary only applies on the TOOLBAR only and not on the PAGE/TAB.. I admit I stand corrected and was a bit confused (anyway, it's a pre-release) and I haven't seen any explanations on How-It-Works.. But still, even if the issue with the Autoupdate is cleared (for me), the option to "OPEN PAGES IN NEW TAB" still wont work for me, or maybe on my Firefox Browser.. Is there anyone here who got it working?

i've finally gotten around to uploading pics with the toolbar.

i didn't get an option to open another tab. all that pops up is the bar that tells me how many are loaded (which gives me a different number than i get if i go to my photo page with another tab).

no glitches. all seems to be working well so far. (i've uploaded one album but not published yet. the second album is loading now.)

not an issue in my mind. i just heard everyone else say they couldn't get the "open a new tab" option to work and i thought i'd toss out there that i don't have that problem because there's no "open a new tab" link anywhere on my page when i'm uploading pics. *shrug*

i never use those links anyway. i tend to have a billion tabs open at any one time and don't need help opening new ones. ;-)

i did have a short period of time where i had the icons but not the number of posts next to the icons. it seems to have righted itself but it lasted for an hour or so. not sure what that was all about.
everdred wrote on Oct 22, '07

Ah, they were referring to the open in a new tab option, which is intended to make toolbar links open in new tabs, rather than re-using your current one.

Nope, it's redirecting fine. Curious thing though, it doesn't always bring the text (album description) along with the photos. Photo titles it does ok. I almost always edit the photo titles & description after I upload anyway, so it's not a problem.
Test batch of 10 pics 2080x1544 took about 20 secs each to upload, so a long pause after about 6 pics feels like a stall (and it dropped the added description text).
The second set of two 2080x1544 with titles took about 1 1/2 seconds for both. The speed maybe just connectivity issues and not the uploader.

no more glitches so far (as I see it) on the latest version.. and I'm finding it really cool, specially when the PM icon shows on the toolbar immediately when someone sends me a message..

the "Open in New Tab" option is perfectly working now..

**if there are plans to upgrade it,I hope the toolbar will be allowed to be "Moved" (or does it depend on the browser) and maybe adding the Contact/Network button =D

but nevertheless, I'm pretty contented with it.

for the 360ers who want email on multiply, this is an excellent solution. not only do you know the minute it's come in. but you can LiveReply with the person at that point, moving it from being an email-like conversation to being a chat-like conversation.

John, the Firefox version of Multiply Toolbar is known to have conflicts with couple of other extensions (Yahoo Photos bulk uploader and Viamatic Foxpose). There may be others. Next version of the toolbar will fix the conflicts with at least these two.

If you have any of those extensions installed, you can disable or uninstall them and restart your browser to make Multiply Toolbar work. If not, please post the list of extensions you have, so we can take a look.
dantcer wrote on Oct 24, '07

just out of curiosity, does the yahoo photos bulk uploader also reek havoc with the usual (as in, not toolbar related) drag and drop adding of photos? i wasn't able to get my drag and drop to work until i turned off extensions and it was then that i realized i have the yahoo uploader installed. (no clue why. i can't for the life of me think of when i might ever have used it.)
dantcer wrote on Oct 25, '07, edited on Oct 25, '07
Some of these tool bars (especially yahoo) come bundled with other programs, etc and install without you knowing it. Some come and with very fine print that you CAN have the software without the toolbar if you untick something or jump through some hoops. So it probably snuck in on ya. It's happened to me before too.

I haven't seen any instances of drag-n-drop being affected by yahoo bulk uploader, but it's possible that I haven't looked hard enough. Unfortunately I can't test it out myself since I can't find it on Yahoo's site (as they closed it down).

If you don't mind, could you post here or pm me the list of extensions that had and turned off for the Multiply toolbar to work? That would help in diagnosing any problems. Thanks.

dantcer wrote on Oct 26, '07
I see what you mean TJ, after typing into it. But it doesn't bother me. But I can see how that can be a bit SMALL for others to use. The actual height of the entire MP toolbar seems to be the determining factor of the size of the search area, and the text size that will fit into it.
tejasmidget wrote on Oct 27, '07
Could be, but I still think all I'm seeing is the top of the letters, not just text too small to see.
That always suggests to me the font is oversized or the default is "absolute" instead of "variable".

it has something to do with the theme (if you're using forefox)

themes may sometimes make the toolbar small (vertically) which results on you not seeing the entire letters you type. try reverting to the default firefox theme or if not, try other themes as well.
tintalasia wrote on Oct 27, '07
May I make a suggestion with the toolbar. It works well enough. I have no complaints. I do feel it would be great if we could choose what we want on it.

I would, for example, love to be able to remove the Yahoo search function, as my IE already has a search bar that I'm quite happy with.

Another thing worth considering is the possibility of showing only the toolbar buttons, so that the toolbar doesn't take up quite so much space. I would love the toolbar to be able to share a space with my other add ons, but its just too big with the buttons and text descriptions. If there is some way we can modify this ourselves, I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks for a super service so far!

Tint~

Several of those text/icons have drop down arrows and it may not be possible to remove one or the other because of that. And in fact, that search feature has a drop down also that you WOULD need here. So removing it would defeat that purpose. I would like to see one thing added actually.. Multiply bookmarks with a drop down that would let us open several windows at once in tabs or separately. As of now, I have to land on several pages/sites and use Firefox's tabbed bookmarks to get here. Perhaps at the "My Multiply" area.... add bookmarks/dropdown.. Or just give us a whole new bookmark thingie :)

Are we ever satisfied??? lol
tintalasia wrote on Oct 27, '07
Dantcer, I appreciate what you're saying, but my other buttons have drop down arrows as well, just not the button + text + arrow.

And no... we're never satistfied lol That's what keeps software developers in business ;) or at least keeps them off the streets and out of mischief!
dantcer wrote on Oct 27, '07
