Multiply Users & Developers Group

Welcome to the MUDS, the official Multiply Users and Developers Group.

As the name suggests, the purpose of this group is to bring Multiply's user and developer communities closer together; it's a place for users to ask questions, discuss thoughts and to offer tips to one another... and for Multiply staff members to do the same!

This is an "official" group, so staff members will actively participate in group discussions. Sometimes they'll even provide sneak peeks at upcoming features you won't see anywhere else. This is your chance to voice your opinion about features before they're released. This group will also be used to gather feedback from our users, to help make Multiply even better. Be sure to let us know how we're doing!

If you'd like to be notified automatically when something new is posted here, just join the group!

I recently started using Facebook a little. I'd signed up to view someone's pictures, and when I recently updated my highschool and college info, I immediately heard from so many old friends who I'd lost touch with over the years. Very cool. That said, the site is a mess, it is so confusing, I have no sense where anything is, it's badly organized, most of the applications are inane. It totally made me appreciate Multiply that much more!

So, I'm not impressed with most of Facebook (except for the fact that so many people are using it!!). One thing I do really like though is that I can take a picture from my iPhone and with one click, have it upload to Facebook. It got me thinking about what I'd like to see from Multiply.

1st - an iPhone app would be cool, to be able to do something similar - rather than taking the picture, and then going through 3-4 clicks to email it my Multiply site.
But more importantly, 2nd - If I am taking a random shot with my cell phone and posting it to Multiply, I don't want it to be its own album, blog, etc. If I do that, it emails my contacts (those that get emailed), and I feel it's just too intrusive for a random picture I'm taking. I just don't think it merits it's own album or blog (at least the kind of pictures that I'd like to take and share). I think it would be nice if we could set up a default album for our mobile pictures. Then anytime we take a mobile pic and send it in, it would get added to that album. But also (and I think this has been mentioned before), I'd like the album to get bumped up on the inbox when a new picture is added. The same way it is when a new reply is added.

So one album for all my pictures that I email in (or ideally automatically save from iPhone). This could be an optional setting so if you want to keep the existing way you could. When new pictures are added, bump it up on the Inbox. And the rest of the rules would stay the same. If someone had replied to one of my pictures and had notifications on, they would get alerted again when I added a picture. Anyone who didn't have notification on for that album wouldn't, exactly like replies.

MessageSuggestion: Links to MediaLockerJul 25, '08 1:00 AM
by Luiz Felipe for everyone
I have the impression that many users aren't using MediaLocker yet simply because there is only one link to it: in the rail on personal pages. How about a link in the Tools box (Inbox) and in the Post page?

I want to be a premium user of multiply. but wonder if I can use the space, free after ads removing, for adding any kind of information.

thanks

This is a small thing but every now and again it really bugs me.

We lost the hover option and now have to click on someone's headshot to see their first name etc. Okay, I've got over that :-)

But this function doesn't work everywhere, which is a nuisance. For example, when I'm viewing my Inbox, if I click on someone's headshot I get taken straight to their site. The same happens if I view my Contacts or Network and click on someone's headshot there. This also happens if you click on the headshot in someone's post in a group - as opposed to clicking on the headshot of someone who has replied to the post, in which case you get to see their first name etc.

I would really love to see this working in the same way wherever we are. I keep forgetting where it works and where it doesn't, and I don't like being kidnapped and taken on journeys that I had no intention of making, visiting the sites of people I don't know and have no interest in visiting, with no warning, no chance to get my passport ready and make sure I have the right jabs... (though of course sometimes one has some pleasant surprises!)

P.S. This has been sort of mentioned before - but quite a while before... here

Edited as I had confused right-click with left-click - thanks, Linda!

Blog EntryStores on Multiply - Part DvaJul 24, '08 11:24 AM
by Meg for everyone
Multiply is for friends and family... and apparently stores located in Southeast Asia.  I brought up the topic of Stores on Multiply once before and was told that "Running a store on Multiply is generally fine with us (despite technically being against our TOS) so long as there's no spam (either messages or invites). That's a line that can't be crossed."

So the stores proliferate and the spam increases (leading to tirades such as the Captain's latest). And we even start getting questions in the help groups from people who need help setting up their stores on Multiply. (Oddly enough, I even had to delete a reverse spam post today in the newbie group -- someone was looking for a store online that has a nice backpack selection.  *eyeroll*)

So, I think about the Captains round-a-bout suggestion that stores should have to buy into their own "Store Premium" package here on Multiply so that they're not just freeloading on the system.  On the one hand, as someone pointed out in the tirade post, that could validate the presence of stores on Multiply and that's not really what I want.  I want to be able to hang out with friends and family store-free.  But then again, perhaps if stores were verboten unless they bought into the system, we could get rid of a large percentage of them, and part of the package in Store Premium could be that they get extra customer support so they don't take up the bandwidth of us users helping other users.

I also like the idea that stores should be groups.  That way people who are interested in the products can sign up and be alerted to sales, etc. And the store owners won't feel like they have to spam the rest of us to let us know that there are new mac skins available so many miles away from me that the postage would be quintuple the actual price of the product itself.

And I think stores should have to sign off on a special TOS specifically for stores that warns them against spamming, etc.  And if they break the rules, they're hasta la vista so fast that the door doesn't get a chance to hardly even open before they're kicked out through it. And that'll hurt big time because they'll have paid for premium that they can't recoup because their account has gone the way of the lilies of the field.  If they want to try again they'll have to pay up again (and resign that TOS again).

The store problem is only going to get worse.  If people want to sell their crap, and other people want to buy their crap, all on Multiply, well, whatever. But I shouldn't even know it's happening.  I'm not interested.  I'm not here for that.  They really need to be pushed into Multiply Store™ zone where they get more of what they want and we get more of what we want (for them to stop bugging us) and Techcrunch will have a heyday ranting on about a social networking site finding yet another way to monetize.  *twirls finger in the air*

Blog EntryMultiply -- A Walled GardenJul 23, '08 11:57 AM
by Meg for everyone
I was just reading through Feld's latest post on Glue and Comments and came across a reply where Facebook was described as a walled garden.  On the few occasions where I've mentioned Multiply (either there or in some other discussions regarding comments/replies in other places) people have poo poo'd Multiply also for being a walled garden.

You may be wondering what the flippin' fetch a walled garden is.  The Real McCrea has a post on it in which he describes the "'walled garden' social networking model [as] a single site that retains all your information and relationships and forces you to do most of your business inside it."  He likens this to the old AOL model where users were kinda stuck within the AOL world rather than having free access to roam the width and breadth of the internet.

My initial response is that I like being in a walled garden.  It's pretty. I know some raging bull isn't going to come busting through the walls and ruin all my beautiful rose beds.  And I know my way around. But then I think about that AOL comparison.  Ouch.  That hurts.

I wonder what de-walling Multiply would  look like.  I can't really picture it.  So I don't feel like I have anything to compare our walled version to.  Should I stick up for the walled garden model and poo poo the poo poo'ers right back?  Or do they have something there and I should stand up and take note?

I really would love to have RSS feeds from my friends' (non-Multiply) blogs get fed right into my inbox.  That would make Multiply my one stop shop in terms of keeping up with folks, even the losers folks who haven't joined Multiply yet. But does that count as de-walling?  Or is that more like having a video cam of the outside world affixed to one of the garden walls so I can watch what's going on outside from within the safety of being behind the wall?

What do you think?  Do you like that Multiply is a walled garden?  What do you think it would look like if it was de-walled and would that be good or ruin it entirely?  Are the walled garden poo poo-ers just a bunch of tech snobs that don't reflect the average social networker? Or are they on to something?

Message[Suggestion] Private messages - easy to locateJul 22, '08 7:49 PM
by ~° Tint for everyone
If there is one thing that drives me a little insane, it is having to go to Custom each time to find my private messages. Would it be terribly hard to include one more category in that little list down the left side of the Media Locker - Private messages?

I know many feel as I do that pm's are tricky to keep track of and hunt down. It would be brilliant if they were just one click away, either in the Media Locker or a tab at the top of the page... there are many possibilities. I wouldn't even mind a link in the Inbox.

Hi there.

I've noticed something that is annoying about the Download Original Image link. In many cases, if you click that link you will get an image that is the same size as the Zoomed image, i.e., you take some time downloading something that doesn't really matter to you since you saw it already in the same size.

I suggest to add next to the link, the image size, so it would help the Premium User to decide if it worth to click and download the file.

Blog Entryinvitation suggestionsJul 20, '08 10:06 AM
by Laura for everyone
Hi,

I joined this group on multiply invitation due to a suggestion I had made.  I had noted that many of my invitations that went out were ignored or otherwise not responded to, but a few did respond, and some responded by asking to be taken off the notification list.  I would like to see a link included in the invitations that would allow the recipient to click a button that would automatically opt them out of the invitation list.  This way the email they receive looks a lot less like SPAM and is more polite.

What do you think?  Does anybody here really have anything to do with how multiply develops?

Blog EntryOn groups and Multiply Premium...Jul 18, '08 2:15 PM
by Everett for everyone
...you tell us. :-)

So Multiply Premium has been available for a few weeks now, and the response has been pretty good so far... a lot of people seem to be finding it useful for storing and sharing their media with the people they know, as it should be.

One question that's come up more than a few times so far is related to Multiply Premium and groups... there seem to be people who would like to be able to apply "Premium" status to a group.

That's all well and good... we don't see anything wrong with that, per se. We're just sort of left wondering what groups and Premium should, like... you know, do.

So, if you'd like to see groups be made eligible for Premium account status, what kind of functionality would you expect it to include? Is it simply about removing the banner ads, or is there something more to it?

Please reply and leave us your thoughts.

Oh, and just because we're almost certain this will be brought up... we're already aware that everyone would like to see it be made possible for you to post content from your personal Media Locker to a group. That's already coming soon... and not just for Premium users, of course.)

Blog Entry[draft] post suggestionJul 18, '08 1:02 PM
by Missthemed for everyone
earlier on today I posted a [draft] album on a group now actually finding that [draft] post can be a pain in the backside ..I happened to remember where I posted mine (amazingly)

Just wondering you know if all [draft] posts that have been posted could come up in the Media Locker that way they would be easier to find I'm sure there are a few [draft] albums hanging round that the people who posted them have totally forgotten they are there or which group they posted them on

Draft posts don't appear in "posted by me" so can be very difficult to find

Blog EntrySuggestion for posting photos on MultiplyJul 18, '08 4:36 AM
by Ruby for everyone
I have a few suggestions in mind posting photos on Multiply and hope to get some feedback...

1) Is there a way to get notifications in the Inbox when an album is being updated? So it will show up at the top and highlighted as bold whenever there are new pictures being added to the album? Right now it's hard to let people know I have added new pictures to an existing album.

2) Family and friends go out together and there are always more than one person with a camera. It's always a hassle to get all the pictures together and share them in ONE album. Currently I use Sharpcast to do that. But it will be so nice if I could do that directly on Multiply. Maybe as I am creating a new album, I can give permission to someone on my contact list to add photos to that same album? And that album will also show up on his/her photo page and indicated as a "shared album". Does anyone else find this useful?

3) Can cross-posting be enabled for photo albums like how it is for blog posts? Crossposting between Multiply and Flickr...Photobucket...or even Facebook?

4) Why can't the post date be adjusted for photo albums like blog posts?

Please make suggestions at muds . You can use the search feature, bottom of this link to see if it's been suggested before:
------------------------

Hello,

When I add 5 or 10 pics to a flicker set and want to add those same pics to Multiply -- my only option is to import the entire Flickr "SET" again and then delete what may be hundreds of duplicates just to get the additional 5 or 10 uploaded. I found this out a while ago when I first joined Multiply.

Is it possible that Multiply could please come up with a way to import individual pics only from Flickr and not just "SET(S)" ? I would like this to be an official request.

I am asking before I make the determination to go Premium or not. If this is not an option in the near future then it might behoove me to just have only a few single lo-res pics on Multiply and them point to my hi-res in a link to Flickr.

Thank you.

Blog EntryEasy Find For Member's Name In GroupsJul 16, '08 1:25 AM
by Linda for everyone
I would like to request a "Specific User" Find Feature for groups on the member's list page so that when a member must be removed, we can get right to it without going through so many pages trying to guess where the M's might be when a group approaches numbers in the "many" thousands.

I had to go hunt down a porny person that spammed a group.  Took me darn near 15 minutes to find them.   Thanks!

Please keep in mind also, Public Posts, private replies for Groups too.  (Must be a member to post or reply option for admins)

Blog EntryUse of calendarJul 15, '08 10:01 PM
by Sans Souci's for everyone
Hi, my favorite techies!
As there are a good number of folks in my network who insist on publishing their dental appointments (and worse) on the public calendar, I wish I had a little box to click to delete entries and only keep what was pertinent to me.
Thanks for your consideration.
Sue

When we get a post on our inbox, that shows a reply, and we click on that reply, IF that reply has been deleted for some reason before we get there, we are taken directly to the post, top of thread.

It would make it so much easier if when clicking on the reply that's lit on our inbox, if it would take us to the end of the thread even though the reply has been removed.

Because we still scroll ALL the way down just in case, usually to find the reply is no longer there.

Thanks!

Blog EntryArrange Photos by DateJul 14, '08 5:22 AM
by Khairunnisa for everyone
I think this is a simple feature to add yet meaningful for those who had uploaded their pictures in Multiply.
I remembered myself taking a lot of pictures during my vacation and my friends the same and the moment i wanted to display 'our shared pictures' in multiply. The arrangement went haywire (using the auto upload / java - both show the same result) because it was arranged in chronological order eventhough i uploaded it in "Date order" and order by "Upload order" does not work too.

Multiply Auto upload on the other hand uploads in an unsystematic manner.. I am not really sure whether it uploads chronogically or by what? My pictures seems to be all jumbled up.

Ok back to the suggestion, Ah yes, Arrange Photos by Date. I hope the development team will be able to implement this soon.
